WIA is an educational and networking opportunity for women who have connections with agriculture.
Date: March 19th, 2010
Time: 8:00am - 3:00pm
Cost: $45.00
The 17th annual Women In Agriculture Conference, an event designed specifically for women involved in agriculture, will be held March 19, 2010 at Nazareth Hall in Grand Rapids, Ohio, from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
This year’s conference features fifteen breakout sessions. Participants will choose three sessions to attend during the morning. Sessions include topics such as passing down the family farm, retirement planning, identity theft, wind energy, grain marketing, antique evaluation, a make it – take it session and gardening. There will also be an opportunity to participate in a health screening session which will include a blood pressure reading, DermaScan and bone density scan. This session will be limited in the number it can serve, so the earlier you register the better your chances are of participating in this session.
A unique aspect of this conference is the tract of sessions designed for young women in agriculture. Several young women from local FFA Chapters attend the conference each year and will have the opportunity to participate in sessions that will help them learn more about agriculture and develop skills needed to succeed in the industry.
After a tasty lunch, participants will hear from the keynote speaker, Lindsay Hill. Hill along with her husband, Andy Vance own and operate ABN Radio. The couple shares on-air duties and serve as ambassadors for agriculture through various speaking engagements. Both Vance and Hill travel across Ohio and the nation covering agriculture related activities. Hill currently serves as Vice-President of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters. Most recently Vance and Hill were the recipients of Ohio Farm Bureau’s Excellence in Agriculture Award.
The Women In Agriculture program began in 1993 as result of a need for farm women to gain more insight into the business of farming and to develop a network of farm women. At the first conference, there were approximately 40 women in attendance. Today the educational event has grown to over 175 participants from around northwestern Ohio and southern Michigan, according to Doris Herringshaw, Ohio State University Extension educator and Women In Agriculture committee chair.
Space for the conference is limited. Early bird registration is $45, postmarked before March 5. Registration postmarked after the deadline is $50. Registration materials are available by calling the Ohio State University Extension Wood County office at (419)354-9050 or on-line at http://wood.osu.edu/topics/family-and-consumer-sciences/women-in-agriculture-1.
